As a player or coach in baseball, the more that you are knowledgeable about, the more control you will have in any situation that comes along. Physical skills and methodology are the two aspects of baseball. Neither is more important than the other. The team must practice how to hit and play their defensive positions. But they must also be knowledgeable about what needs to be done and how to prioritize those responsibilities. Let's look at some expert baseball principles that everyone on the team should know about.

Defensive strategy in baseball depends on the circumstances. That is why you will sometimes see the infield playing closer to the line than other times. What they are doing is simply minimizing scoring opportunities by tightening up the field coverage. On the other hand, this creates an opening in the middle of the field, making base hits easier to hit. When you think about this, it is a question of minimizing the most dangerous scoring opportunities. But these are the decisions that must be made when the situation is close. One practice everyone should be familiar with is tagging up. If the team currently has players on base and there are under two outs, a runner can tag up or run to the next base whenever a fly ball is caught. It is a must that you understand that the player must not start running until the ball has been caught. This tricky run is oftentimes done when there is someone on third base and the ball is way out in the field. This can make a score for the running team. Whereas the player in the outfield could have a good arm, which means the runner had better be very fast in order to get to home plate.

Outfield players have to know about what is going on in the game and what is the most important at any point in time. Simply put, your job is to catch the balls that come in your area. But it is also important that you know where to throw the ball once you get it. It's fairly common for outfielders to throw to the wrong base. This can be an error that pays the price.

Basically, you should throw to a deter a run from scoring or to stop a runner from being able to score. This generally means to throw the ball to the base in front of the runner. So if the batter gets a hit and is on first when you get the ball, you should throw the ball to second base.

There is no substitute for hard work and practice if you want to play better or learn how to coach others. But some things you just cannot learn until you use them in real game, and that is why experience is often the best teacher.
